Video from a recent study shows numerous examples of octopuses using their arms to punch fish, but it’s not part of a sanctioned aquatic boxing match. Instead, researchers said the animals do this to displace the fish and keep them in line.

How does an octopus exert dominance over his fishy friends? By using one of his eight “arms” to keep them in line. Researchers at Germany’s Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior clocked the punchy habit while studying how the different species hunt together in the Red Sea. They called the behavior “partner control mechanism.”
“Octopuses and fishes are known to hunt together, taking advantage of the other’s morphology and hunting strategy,” Mr Sampaio said.
“Since multiple partners join, this creates a complex network where investment and pay-off can be unbalanced, giving rise to partner control mechanisms.”
