January 20th: Observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day

This Doodle honors the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights movement leader and lifelong advocate for equality and justice. Across the U.S., many participate in a Day of Service to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Today, we honour the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his fight for justice, equality & unity.

A time to honor his legacy of equality and service. Dr. King asked, ‘What are you doing for others today?’ Let’s reflect on his words and prepare to give back, big or small, to make a difference.

Dr. King’s words continue to inspire us to rise above challenges and work toward a better, more just society. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let us honor his vision by fostering unity and standing for what is right.

Why do we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Why We Celebrate MLK Day?

The day celebrated the life and work of Dr. King, who was a Baptist minister and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement.

People are encouraged to use the day to “reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by Dr. King.”

A Federal Holiday

It wasn’t for 15 years until after King’s death that civil rights activists finally succeeded in making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a nationally observed holiday.

On Nov. 2, 1983, Reagan signed a bill making the third Monday in January a federal holiday in observance of King’s legacy.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
