Sam Moore, half of dynamic soul duo Sam & Dave, has died at 89.

Devastated to hear we’ve lost the great Sam Moore, from that electric Atlantic/Stax duo, Sam & Dave.

Publicist Jeremy Westby said Moore died Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida, due to complications while recovering from surgery. No additional details were immediately available.

Who was Sam Moore?

Samuel David Moore (October 12, 1935 – January 10, 2025) was an American singer who was best known as a member of the soul and R&B duo Sam & Dave from 1961 to 1981.

He is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame (for “Soul Man”), the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.

He was honored at the first annual American Music Honors ceremony here in NJ in 2023.

Moore died following surgery at a hospital in Coral Gables, Florida, on January 10, 2025, at the age of 89.

“What comes to mind is that I look at it as coming from a humble beginning,” Sam Moore told the Miami Herald after the funeral service where he and his wife sat with the surviving presidents at the cathedral.
