‘Defeated and sad’
The team around Boer is ‘devastated and sad’ by the sudden death of the chef, a spokesperson said. “We hope for some peace for the family, so that they can process this loss.”
De man die jarenlang de boerenkoolmaaltijd voor het kerstdiner op school kookte is veel te vroeg overleden. De man van drie sterren. De man die altijd gewoon bleef. Onze Zwolse man. #jonnieboer pic.twitter.com/9fZZJHQbVD

The spokesperson expressed deep sorrow. “Everyone is extremely sad and devastated. It’s incomprehensible,” he said. “It’s so sudden and abrupt. There is a sense of shock among the staff and family, of course.”
The future of De Librije remains uncertain. “We are considering our next steps,” the spokesperson added, noting that there was little information available at this stage.

Under Boer’s leadership, De Librije has held three Michelin stars since 2004.
Jonnie Boer (9 January 1965 – 23 April 2025) was a Dutch Michelin star winning head chef and co-owner of the restaurant De Librije in Zwolle, Netherlands.
Boer was born in Giethoorn. Together with his wife and business partner Thérèse Boer he ran the 3-starred De Librije (in 16th century monastery library building[1]) and Librije’s Winkel (cooking shop).[2] They also owned Librije’s Hotel and Librije’s Atelier (cook- and wine school), all located in a former women’s prison.[3]
“We will not make any further announcements about that,” he said. “It is very sad for everyone.”
Recently, the family became the subject of De Opvolging, a television series following the development of the restauranteurs’ business as they brought their children in to help run the company. “We will make you proud!” wrote their daughter, Isabelle Boer, in a post on Instagram.
