Dame maggie smith has sadly died at the age of 89. forever a legend!

Dame Maggie Smith CH DBE, the creative, multi-award winning actress best known as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films. Superb actress, magnificent lady. As entertaining, sharp and witty off screen as she was off it.  The two-time Oscar-winning British actress who starred in Harry Potter films, Downton Abbey and scores of other movies and TV shows. A very very sad loss for Britain.

Her sons did not disclose her cause of death in the statement. Smith had been candid about her health issues in the past, suffering from glaucoma, Graves’ disease and breast cancer, and she underwent hip-replacement surgery in her 80s. In their statement, her sons thanked the “wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”

The respected English dame “passed away peacefully” early Friday in a London hospital, her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, said in a statement to The Times.

Smith’s sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, said in a statement that Smith died early Friday in a London hospital.

“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” they said in a statement issued through publicist Clair Dobbs.

“She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances. My condolences to her boys and wider family.”
