Brenton Wood dead, soul singer behind hit song ‘Oogum Boogum,’ dies at 83

Rest In Passing Mr. Brenton Wood you gave us so many great Melodies to jam to as a culture forever in our hearts.

Wood was hospitalized in May 2024, pausing his farewell tour.

Brenton Wood died at his home in Moreno Valley, California, on January 3, 2025, at the age of 83.

Alfred Jesse Smith also known as Brenton Wood was born on July 26, 1941, was an American singer and songwriter known for his three 1967 hit singles, “The Oogum Boogum Song” (peaking at No. 34 on the US Billboard Hot 100), “Gimme Little Sign” (peaking at No. 9), and “Baby You Got It” (also peaking at No. 34).

Brenton Wood cause of death?

Though an official cause of death has not been revealed, Gallegos told The Post, “It just was his old age. He was 83 years old.”

Brenton Wood wrote The Oogum Boogum song because he desperately needed a hit. The meaning of the song was another way to say Abracadabra to those he believed were against him. Rest in Power So Cal legend.

Mr. Brenton Wood would captivate many hearts & minds in North America and beyond his music is to this day very cherished in the Marvelous City of Los Angeles, California especially with the popular “lowrider culture”.
