At the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival, a 30-year-old man drove a black Audi SUV into a crowd.On April 26, 2025, a horrific car ramming incident claimed nine lives and injured others at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, a vibrant Filipino heritage festival near East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street in Vancouver, Canada.
The Vancouver Police Department arrested a 30-year-old local man, known to authorities, who drove a black SUV into the crowd at approximately 8:14 p.m. local time. Authorities have stated they are “confident” the incident was not an act of terrorism, with investigations exploring possible mental health factors, according to a CNN source.
The festival, celebrating Filipino hero Datu Lapu-Lapu, drew thousands before the tragedy unfolded. Police have set up a 24-hour assistance center at Douglas Park Community Centre to support affected families. The incident, mourned widely on X, has left Vancouver’s Filipino community and city leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, in grief.
