At least 179 people have been killed after a passenger plane skidded and crashed while trying to land at Muan International Airport in South Korea in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.

The incident occurred when a Jeju Air flight, carrying 181 passengers and crew from Bangkok, veered off the runway upon landing, colliding with a barrier and bursting into flames.

As rescue operations continue, more than 130 people remain missing, with emergency services working tirelessly to sift through the wreckage.

The plane, identified as a Boeing 737, had a landing gear malfunction, which led to the catastrophic event.

Initial reports suggest that a possible bird strike may have contributed to the equipment failure, although this has not yet been confirmed by official investigations.

“When I woke up, I had already been rescued,” he told doctors at the hospital, according to its director Ju Woong.

“He’s fully able to communicate,” Ju said. “There’s no indication yet of memory loss or such.”

The CEO of Jeju Air bowed in apology on Sunday after one of his airline’s planes crashed and burst into flames at an airport in South Korea, killing at least 120 people.

“Eyewitness accounts have talked then about a series of explosions and certainly images that we have been seeing have shown a catastrophic fire,” our correspondent added.
