Four people from Wisconsin were killed on Saturday when their private, single-engine plane crashed in a field near an airport in rural Illinois after reportedly striking powerlines, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 551-587 County Road 1400 N, three miles south of Mattoon, near Coles County Memorial Airport.

The Illinois State Police, FAA, and NTSB are investigating the fatal crash, which remains active and ongoing.

The plane was found in a roadway, which is currently closed.

Four people were killed today when a small plane hit power lines and crashed in central Illinois. The Cessna 180 single-engine plane went down around 10:15 a.m. local time in Trilla. Authorities are investigating the incident.
