Passengers evacuate on to wing of burning American Airlines jet

The Federal Aviation Administration told the press in a statement that American Airlines Flight 1006 had departed from Colorado Springs Airport and was bound for Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when the “crew reported engine vibrations.”

“After landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides,” the FAA said.

One passenger, Gabrielle Hibbitts, told the press that, “As soon as the plane landed, we smelled this weird burning plastic smell and then everybody started screaming and saying there was a fire.”

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commented:

“American Airlines Flight 1006 diverted to and landed safely at Denver International Airport around 5:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, March 13, after the crew reported engine vibrations.”

“After landing and while taxiing to the gate, an engine caught fire, and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides. The Boeing 737-800 departed Colorado Springs Airport and was headed to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.”

An American Airlines jet carrying 178 people caught fire after landing at Denver International Airport in Colorado. Twelve people were reportedly injured. A US aviation authority said an engine on the Boeing 737-800 caught fire while taxiing to the gate.
