7.7-magnitude earthquake hits Myanmar and Thailand at least 144 dead

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Neighboring regions, including Thailand and China’s Yunnan Province, felt significant tremors.

Just experienced a 7.7 strength #earthquake in #Bangkok for close to 3 minutes. Its epicenter was Mandalay, Myanmar, over 1200 kms from here.

Despite the distance it swayed buildings; caused cracks, forced evacuations and rooftop pools cascaded much water to down below. Scary!

According to washingtonpost A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar early Friday afternoon, rocking the country’s second-most-populous city, Mandalay, and shaking buildings more than 600 miles away in the Thai capital, Bangkok. At least 144 people were killed in Myanmar and at least 732 were injured.

Collapsed Building in Bangkok Identified

The construction project that collapsed due to the earthquake is the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) building in Bangkok, Thailand.

Many buildings were reportedly destroyed in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar. Video showing people being rescued from the rubles of the collapsed buildings.

“I heard it, and I was sleeping in the house. I ran as far as I could in my pyjamas out of the building,” Duangjai, a resident of popular tourist city Chiang Mai, told AFP after tremors were felt across northern and central Thailand.
